The goal is simple: choose a battery that can safely run your specific CPAP machine for the length of outage you want to cover. Bigger is not always better, but an undersized battery can leave you awake when you need it most.

Start With Your CPAP's Real Power Needs

Every CPAP uses power differently. A basic machine running without a heated humidifier or heated tube may use far less energy than one using both comfort features at high settings. That difference matters because runtime estimates can vary from a single night to several nights on the same battery.

Look at the power label on your CPAP power brick or check the machine manual. You are looking for watts, volts, and amps. If the label lists volts and amps but not watts, multiply them to get a rough maximum wattage. For example, 24 volts multiplied by 3 amps equals 72 watts.

That maximum number is a starting point, not necessarily what the machine draws all night. Pressure settings, leaks, altitude, humidification, tube heating, and ramp settings all affect actual use. A person using modest pressure with no heat may need much less power than the label suggests. Someone using a heated humidifier through a cold winter night may need considerably more.

Before buying, check whether your CPAP uses 12V, 24V, or standard wall power. Many machines can run more efficiently from a manufacturer-approved DC cable than from a regular AC outlet. That cable can make a meaningful difference in battery runtime because it avoids converting battery power to AC and back again inside the CPAP power supply.

Choose Capacity for More Than One Night

Battery capacity is usually measured in watt-hours, written as Wh. This is the most useful number for comparing portable power stations and CPAP batteries. A 300Wh battery stores more energy than a 150Wh battery, though usable capacity will be somewhat lower after normal conversion losses.

For a simple overnight plan, estimate your machine's expected wattage and multiply it by your sleeping hours. If a CPAP averages 25 watts for eight hours, it needs roughly 200 watt-hours. Add a buffer for power conversion, colder temperatures, and the fact that batteries do not always deliver their full rated capacity in real conditions.

A practical rule is to choose a battery with at least 25% to 50% more capacity than your estimated overnight need. If you expect extended outages, plan for two or three nights rather than one. Recharging may not be possible right away after a major weather event.

A compact battery may be the right fit for a one-night backup or travel kit. A larger portable power station is usually the better choice for homeowners, RV travelers, and anyone who wants enough reserve power for multiple nights or a few small essentials such as a phone and LED light. Capacity adds weight and cost, so buy for the outage scenario you are most likely to face, not an unrealistic worst case.

Most portable power stations offer AC outlets, USB ports, and 12V DC outputs. Plugging your normal CPAP wall adapter into an AC outlet is straightforward and works with many machines. It is often the easiest route, especially when you need a backup that is ready with minimal setup.

DC power is often more efficient, but only use a cable designed for your exact CPAP model. A generic plug that fits physically is not proof that it delivers the right voltage or polarity. Using the wrong cable can damage equipment or prevent it from operating.

Pure sine wave AC output is a smart feature to look for in a power station. It provides clean, stable power similar to household electricity and is a dependable choice for sensitive electronics. Avoid relying on an old vehicle inverter or a low-quality modified sine wave inverter unless your CPAP manufacturer specifically confirms compatibility.

If you use a battery with an AC outlet, test the setup before an emergency. Confirm that the machine starts, runs through the night, and does not show an error message. A backup is only dependable when you already know how it performs.

Heated Features Are the Biggest Runtime Trade-Off

Heated humidification and heated tubing can make therapy more comfortable, especially in dry or cold conditions. They also consume a large share of your battery power. During an outage, turning down or temporarily disabling these features may extend runtime dramatically.

This is a personal comfort decision. Do not change therapy settings that your clinician has told you are medically necessary. But if your machine allows it and you have used it comfortably before, an outage mode with lower humidity or no tube heat can stretch a limited battery through the night.

Plan ahead instead of experimenting during a storm. Try the lower-power settings on an ordinary night, see how you feel, and note how much battery remains in the morning. That gives you a realistic plan instead of a vague estimate.

Recharge Options Matter After the First Night

A battery is only as useful as your ability to recharge it. For short blackouts, wall charging before the outage is all you need. For longer disruptions, consider how you will restore power safely.

Vehicle charging can be useful when your car is available and can run outdoors. It is usually slower than wall charging, so do not wait until the battery is nearly empty. Solar charging can add valuable independence for camping, road travel, and longer emergencies, but panel size, weather, shade, and daylight hours determine how much energy you actually recover.

If solar is part of your plan, make sure the panel and power station are compatible. Practice setting it up before you need it. A cloudy day is not the time to figure out which cable or input setting is required.

Many buyers prefer lithium iron phosphate, or LiFePO4, power stations for emergency storage because they are designed for many charge cycles and tend to hold up well over time. Whatever battery type you choose, store it according to the manufacturer's guidance and check its charge level regularly. A backup packed away at 12% is not a backup.

Set Up a Simple Outage Kit

Keep your CPAP battery backup in an easy-to-reach location, not buried in a garage cabinet. Store the correct CPAP cable or power brick with it, along with a short extension cord if your setup needs one. Labeling the pouch or case saves time when the lights go out.

Your kit should also include a flashlight or headlamp, a charged phone power bank, and any supplies you need for a normal night of therapy. If you use distilled water for your humidifier, keep an appropriate supply on hand. Do not assume you can buy it after a widespread outage.

Run a full practice night once or twice a year. Start with a fully charged battery, use the settings you expect to use during an outage, and check the remaining battery level in the morning. This test tells you more than a product claim ever can. It also reveals small problems, such as a loose cable, a power-saving setting that shuts off too soon, or a battery that needs recharging.

Safety Comes First

Use portable power equipment in a dry, ventilated area and follow the battery manufacturer's instructions. Do not run a gas generator indoors, in a garage, or near windows and vents. Generators can help recharge equipment outdoors at a safe distance, but carbon monoxide risk is serious and never worth shortcuts.

Do not use a damaged battery, frayed CPAP cord, or improvised wiring. Keep batteries away from extreme heat, standing water, and heavy objects that could crush them. If your CPAP is part of treatment for a serious breathing condition, ask your sleep clinician or equipment provider what backup plan they recommend for your circumstances.
